2017 Volkswagen Golf R Mk7.5 priced from $52,990, arrives August

The Volkswagen Golf R Mk7.5 will arrive in Australia in August, with prices starting from $52,990. The arrival of the Mk7.5 sees the return of the Golf R wagon, although this time around it will sit in showrooms as permanent part of the Golf R lineup.

The Golf R hatch will come with the choice of either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG, while the wagon will be exclusively fitted with the seven-speed DSG. Those who are keen can option up to the limited Golf R Wolfsburg Edition hatch or wagon for a $2500 premium on top of the base price. It’s worth noting that the regular Golf R wagon won’t arrive until January 2018, however the Wolfsburg Edition wagon will be on sale in August.

Under the bonnet of all Mk7.5 Golf R variants sits a more powerful 213kW and 380Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine – up 7kW over the previous Golf R. Move inside and the Mk7.5 offers a new 9.2-inch Discover Pro navigation system with gesture control, a 12.3-inch Active Info digital driver’s cluster, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto technology.

Occupants are treated to Vienna leather seats with heated front pews, while the driver’s seat is electrically-adjustable with memory function and power lumbar adjustment. Other features include privacy glass, premium LED tail-lights, LED headlights with dynamic cornering lights, LED interior ambient lighting, keyless entry with push-button start, front and rear parking sensors, and 19-inch ‘Spielberg’ alloy wheels.

Unlike the Golf GTI which is front-wheel drive, the Golf R uses a Haldex four-wheel drive system to put its power to the ground. The Golf R comes with adaptive chassis control with selectable driving modes.

Buyers will have the choice to option for the Driver Assistance Package ($1300) and Panoramic Sunroof ($1900). The optional Driver Assistance Package adds adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, dynamic light assist, rear cross traffic alert, and proactive occupant protection system.

The Wolfsburg Edition will be limited to 300 examples in both hatch and wagon, and sees features such as 19-inch Pretoria alloy wheels in Grey Metallic, ‘Carbon’ nappa leather seat upholstery, a 400W Dynaudio sound system, Driver Assistance Package, and real carbon-fibre exterior mirror caps added. Wolfsburg Edition buyers will have to fork out $1900 if they want the panoramic sunroof added.
